About Accra

Ghana's capital and largest city. It is located in the Gulf of Guinea on the Atlantic coast of Africa. The city's name comes from an ant species that is quite prevalent in the region. Between the years 1650-1680; the city and region was colonized by the British, Dutch and Danes, who organized a sort of sharing amongst themselves. By 1877, it had become the center of the British Gold Coast colony. During this period, Accra grew rapidly as a city until 1957, when Ghana was granted independence from the British Empire. Accra is known as one of Africa's safest capital cities, as well as a major trading and commercial center. It is Ghana's most important port city. The main industrial activities in the city are exports of canned food, and production of chemicals, textiles and garments. It is also an important cocoa producer. The urban landscape is composed of crowded market locations squeezed between modern homes and squatter settlements.

The city's most vibrant and largest market is Makola Market. Labadi, Coco and Bojo beaches are centres of marine tourism. Visitors can learn about slavery and the history of the Ashanti Kingdom at the National Museum of Ghana, and afterwards visit Independence Square in the city center to shop for jewelry, and regard the architecture which still bears the traces of the colonial period. Near the city, Kakum National Park and Mole National Park are also located. Mole National Park is spectacular with stunning views of the countryside. In Accra, a steppe climate is present, with low annual rainfall.

Accra Kotoka International Airport is located 8 km from the city center.

Transportation to Accra City Center from Airport

Ghana's capital and largest city, Accra is also the political, economic and cultural center of the country. Kotoka International Airport in the city, which is sister cities with Adana and Samsun in Turkey and Chicago and Washington in the United States, connects the important cities of Africa and the world and Accra.

The airport that hosts about 3 million passengers per year is not very big. However, it is possible to find almost anything here that travelers may need before and after the flight. The airport serves with two terminals; domestic flights take place from Terminal 1 while international flights take place from Terminal 2.

You can switch between terminals before leaving the airport. Restaurants, cafes, duty-free shops and private passenger lounges are located in Terminal 2, from where international flights take place. There is also a VIP Lounge, which is usually used by diplomats, at the airport. It is possible to fly directly from Istanbul to Accra via Turkish Airlines flights. The city also has direct flights to cities such as London, Beirut, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Lisbon and New York. In the city, the period from May to July and from August to October is mostly rainy. If you are traveling outside of these months, you will be able to explore the city more easily.

Located 9 kilometers north of the city, the airport welcomes close to 2 million passengers each year. There are taxis, buses, hotel services, limousine among the options in Accra to reach the city center from the airport. You can easily get to Accra city center or other nearby areas by renting a car from airport.

Most of the taxis in the city do not have a taximeter. For this reason, you should absolutely agree with the driver about the price before taking the taxi. If you are a crowded group, taxi drivers can ask you to pay more. Depending on the traffic and the route, the journey from the airport to the city center takes about 25-50 minutes by taxi.

Bus
