About Phuket

Phuket Province consists of 33 islands, one of which is the island of Phuket, which is the largest island in Thailand. It is located in the south of Thailand, in the Andaman Sea. The island of Phuket, which is close to the Phang Nga Province and the Krabi Province, is connected to Phang Nga by bridge. With an area of 576 square kilometers, Phuket has a rich and colorful history, distinguishing it from the other regions of Thailand. Due to the island’s location between China and India it has always been an important trading port and center throughout history. While trade used to be the main livelihood for the residents of the island, which has a population of 600 thousand, today the main source of livelihood is tourism.

Phuket, which means hill, was badly damaged during the 2004 tsunami. The tsunami, in which 5 thousand and 300 people lost their lives, greatly damaged the tourist areas as well. The country quickly rebuilt the areas that were destroyed, enabling it to become the most important tourist destination in South Asia in recent years. The island is made up of 3 districts, Mueang, Phuket, Kathu, and Thalang. The average annual temperature varies between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius. Thailand is home to Chinese and Malay origin islanders and Phuket Island is home to an ethnic group known as the Moken, or Sea Gypsies, whose lives are totally shaped by the sea. The international airport located on the island contributed to the development of tourism and the economy.

Regularly scheduled flights from Australia, China, England, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, and Switzerland fly into the airport, which is located in the north of Phuket Island. Getting from the airport to the city center takes about an hour. There are buses that go directly to the beaches and hotels located outside of the center of the island. The island was one of the 5 destinations selected by Fortune Magazine in their ‘Where to Retire Abroad’ article. This might be why so many foreigners prefer to live in Phuket, especially those who have retired.
