About Jorge Chavez Intl. Airport

In 1960, the airport was opened under the name of Lima-Callao International Airport in Callao which is an important port city in Peru. Today the airport is used as the international and domestic flight hub of the country. The airport was renamed Jorge Chavez International Airport in 1965 after the famous Peruvian aviator Jorge Chavez, who died when his trail flight crashed. In 2001, large expansion work was initiated and in 2005 a shopping center was built and in 2007 a hotel was built. The eight year renovation and expansion project was completed in 2009. Since then the airport's annual passenger statistics have been over 19 million passengers.
