About Kyrenia

Kyrenia is a port city of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea in the north and the Kyrenia Mountains in the south. In Roman times the city was named Corneum as its history dates back to the 10th century. Besides the Roman Empire, Kyrenia bears the traces of many great civilizations such as Egyptian, Phoenician, Hittite, Persian, Byzantine, Genoese, British, Venetian, and Ottoman. Since 1974, Turks settled in the northern part of Cyprus, where Kyrenia is located, and the southern part of the island inhabited by Greeks.

Kyrenia is well-known as a city of tourism, culture, and economy with various offerings such as its historically substantial harbor, universities, hotels, nightlife, and festivals. Due to the Mediterranean climate, the city has mild and rainy winters from December to February. The summer season is quite dry and hot and lasts from May to October. The spring is ideal for hiking and cycling, and with its turquoise sea, Kyrenia is a great place for water sports.

Kyrenia presents a variety of cafes and restaurants towards the port; however, the city’s rich historical sites are also worth exploring. Along the harbor, there is an important landmark, Kyrenia’s castle, which is believed that have been built by the Byzantines in the 7th century. As an example of Ottoman architecture;  Agha Cafer Pasha Mosque was built in the 16th century, and is still the most important religious center of the city today with a remaining single minaret, fountains, and arches. Besides cultural spots such as The Kyrenia Shipwreck Museum and the Peace and Freedom Museum, you can enjoy natural sightseeing in Karmi Village.

The nearest airport to Kyrenia is Ercan Airport in Nicosia, which is 44 kilometers from Kyrenia. For transportation options, you can take the KIBHAS buses, rent a car or take a taxi from the airport.
