About Karaganda

Karaganda is the capital of the Karaganda Region in Kazakhstan. It is the country’s 4th most populated city and is home to rich coal mines. The city gets its name from the ‘caragana’ bushes that are plentiful in the region. The city’s establishment dates back to 1856. The development of the coal and copper mining sectors and the implementation of railway lines gave the city great momentum. Karaganda grew very quickly, gaining ‘city’ status in 1934 and becoming the capital of the Karaganda Region in 1936. Structures such as the Botanical Garden, Regional History Museum, Regional Museum of the Fine Arts, Ecological Museum, and The Miners Palace of Culture are the city’s tourism, culture, and art hubs. Karaganda experiences a cold and temperate climate. The Sary-Arka Airport is located 24 km southeast of the city center.
