About Il gzira

Il Gżira is located between Sliema and Msida in the Central Region (In the northeast) of Malta and it means ‘Island’.

Considered as a prostitution town in the middle of 19th century, Il Gżira attracts attention with both its new restructuring and its historical characteristic you will observe in its old houses today.  The seaside of the town is famous for the wonderful view of Valletta illuminated at night and Marsamxett Harbor seems very photogenic together with the marina and Manoel Island.

The town is one of the places with the most resonable accommodation opportunities of Malta and you can reach the neighboring islands and towns easily. The town, where you can find quite a few restaurants and bars, is also close to St. Julian, which is known for its night life. As it covers a significantly small area, you can see the whole town by walking and discover fascinating places on the way.

Manoel Island, the source of inspiration for the name of the town, is mentioned with the ‘Lazaretto Quarantine Hospital’ founded by the Knight Jean Paul Lascaris in 1634 as a precaution against the great plague. Built in 1726 and remembered with the name of the master who built it, Fort Manoel exhibits the magnificence of the military engineering in that century. The island and the fort were used as a military base in the Second World War, and because the history in it was destroyed, it was restored substantially in 2006 and gained its current appearance. The Parish Church, St. Paul’s Cathedral, St. Agatha underground cemeteries, Fort St. Elmo, Blue Cave and Orpheum Theatre, which hosted the famous musical band the Black Sabbath in 1995, are among the worth-seeing places of the town.

The closest airport to Il Gżira is Malta International Airport which is in Luqa and 6 kilometers away. You can reach the center from the airport by taxis or buses.
