About Granada

Granada is located in southern Spain, in the State of Andalusia, on the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, which is the highest point in the country. The city is an hour away from the Mediterranean coast, making it a rare city where you can enjoy both skiing and the sea. Throughout history the city was a hub for artists, traders, and scientists. Today Granada is the second most touristic city in Spain, after Barcelona. Meaning ‘pomegranate’, Granada was the last bastion of the Moors. As cities under Moorish domination were becoming extinct in Europe, Granada was able to protect itself for another 250 years. With the fear of possible damage to the palace during a war, the keys to the city were voluntarily handed over to the Spanish king and queen.

It is rumored that Christopher Columbus’ voyage of discover in 1492 was financed from the Alhambra. The glorious Alhambra is one of the city’s music, touristic, and historic symbols. This unique structure, which was built by a Moorish emir, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city emerged as a magnificent synthesis of Spanish and Arabic culture that is architecturally inspiring. Delicious tapas, Spanish folk music and Flamenco are only some of the wonderful things the city has to offer. The Alhambra and Generalife, a palace with beautiful gardens, are the city’s top tourist attractions. In addition to these places, the most popular sightseeing venues include the city’s cathedral, Arab neighborhood of Albaicin, Plaza Nueva, Palace of Charles V, and Arab baths. Granada is also the birthplace of poet Federico Garcia Lorca, who helped spread Spanish poetry to the world. The city has a Mediterranean climate. The Federico Garcia Lorca Airport, also known as the Granada airport, is located 12 km from the city center.
