About Dushanbe

Dushanbe is the capital and largest city of Tajikistan; it is also the country’s most important commercial and tourist center. The city’s name is derived from the Tajik word for ‘Monday’ because it was once a small village that held a farmer’s market on Mondays. Places to see in the city include the Tajikistan National Museum, the Monument of Amir Ismail Samani, the Puppet Theatre, National Museum of Antiquities of Tajikistan, and the Dushanbe Fine Arts Museum.

The city remained under Soviet administration for many years and these effects can easily be seen in the city’s planning and architecture. Dushanbe experiences a continental climate with hot and dry summers and cold and snowy winters. When you go to the city enjoy the classical shashmaqam music, which is very special to Tajiks. Another place to visit while in the city is the Tajik Academy of Sciences, which hosts handwritten works of 13,000 different poets and writers including Ömer Hayyam and İbn-i Sina.

There are many restaurants and cafes in Dushanbe, especially on Rudaki Street in the city center, where you can enjoy different flavors including local delicacies as well as Turkish, Indian, French, and Italian cuisine. Among the most popular dishes is Plov, prepared with lamb, rice, and vegetables. Kefir, with its countless health benefits, is very popular with breakfast. Desserts are usually served before the main meal in the country, so don’t be surprised if you receive it before you’ve eaten.
