About Cumana
Located in the northeast of Venezuela, Cumana has a population of about 824 thousand and is the capital of Venezuela’s Sucre State. It is a port city located the on the banks of the River Manzanares on the Caribbean coast. In the 1520’s this city was the first settlement of Europeans in South America. The city has been destroyed by massive earthquakes and rebuilt several times.
Cumana is a natural port city and through this port it exports coffee, tobacco, and sugar cane. In addition, the city is developed in the furniture, textiles, and cigarette sectors. Built in 1958, the Universidad de Oriente is the city’s only university. The Mochima National Park, located near the city, is the most beautiful and most popular beach among tourists. The Castle of Saint Anthony of the Eminence and the Castillo de Santa Maria de la Cabeza are the oldest buildings in the city.
