About Atyrau
Located in the west of Kazakhstan, 30 km north of the Caspian Sea, Atyrau is situated at the delta where the Ural River flows into the Caspian Sea. Since the river forms the border between Asia and Europe the city is considered to be both in Europe and Asia. Another interesting geographical fact is that Atyrau is located 20 m below sea level.
Founded by Russian trader Mikhaylo Guryev in 1645 as Lower Yaik Fort, the city was the target of Kazakh raids and was destroyed several times. The city was named ‘Guryev’ in 1708 and carried this name until 1992. Atyrau is the energy capital of Kazakhstan. Global giants in the oil and gas sector focused their investments on this city due to its rich reserves. The Kazakh-Russian pipeline, which operates as a joint venture, is located between Atyrau and the Russian city Samara. The line is the route that exports the highest volumes of oil in the country.
