About Abadan

Abadan is a city at the heart of Iran's oil industry, perhaps comparable to Houston in the United States. One of the world's largest oil refinery is located here. The city lies on the Shatt al-Arab Delta, on the shores of the Persian Gulf and roughly 53 km inland from the sea. The city was established in the year 1047, and after being under Ottoman rule for centuries, and became part of Iranian territory in 1847 as a result of a treaty. Because of the salt contained in the soil, the countryside around Abadan is unsuitable for agriculture. But it was able to gain some wealth, before the discovery of petrol, with establishment of trade in salt and straw. The mats made here with the name 'Abadani' gave an excellent reputation all over Iran.

Today, the city boasts some of the world's most important oil reserves and refineries. Therefore, it is among the most economically powerful cities of Iran.

In addition, date plantations are also located in areas that have been "desalted", and form an important source of livelihood for the local rural people. The city, which was an ordinary town before the oil industry moved in, changed in the face of foreign investors in 1909 when oil was first discovered. Today the city is a major center of both crude oil extraction as well as refining into various products.

Abadan is influenced by an arid, hot desert climate. Abadan International Airport is located 12 km from the city center.
