About Papua New Guinea

Situated in Oceania, Papua New Guinea encompasses the eastern part of the island of New Guinea and some surrounding islands. It shares borders with Indonesia to the west and Australia to the south. Papua New Guinea is governed by a constitutional monarchy and is divided into four regions, and 22 provinces including Bougainville, Chimbu, Milne Bay, and West New Britain.
The capital city of the country is Port Moresby. Besides Port Moresby, other major cities in the country include Goroka, Kerema, Lea, Madang, Mount Hagen, and Samarai. Papua New Guinea boasts a rich linguistic diversity with approximately 820 different local languages and dialects spoken among the people. The official languages are English, Tok Pisin, and Motu.
The country has an approximate population of 9 million. The population is comprised of around 80% Papuans and 15% Melanesians. Other ethnic groups in the country include Polynesians, Negritos, Micronesians, Europeans, and Chinese. About 31% of the population adheres to local beliefs, while 32% follow Christianity, 3% practice Islam, and 34% belong to other religions. The currency used in Papua New Guinea is the Papua New Guinean Kina. 
Papua New Guinea's economy is primarily based on trade in commodities such as oil, gold, copper, coffee, cocoa, and shrimp. The country predominantly trades with Australia, the People's Republic of China, and Japan. Its import products include machinery parts, industrial raw materials, and pharmaceuticals. Due to excessive rainfall in the tropical climate, forests are abundant, limiting agricultural land. Nonetheless, there has been significant development in the tourism and construction sectors in recent years.
Papua New Guinea generally experiences a hot and humid climate. From May to December is rainy and cool, while January to April sees extremely hot weather. The best time to visit the country is between June and September.
Papua New Guinea offers a variety of traditional foods and beverages. Must-try flavors include beef, roasted sweet potatoes, and banana cake. Additionally, Muli Warra is one of their most famous local drinks. Fish, seafood, and potatoes are the most consumed foods in the country, and exotic fruits are an essential part of the diet due to the tropical climate.
Papua New Guinea is located in one of the world's most biologically diverse regions, known as the "Coral Triangle," which encompasses the areas between the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. In the last decade, 33 new fish species, including the priest fish, have been discovered in this region.
