About Eritrea

Eritrea, located in the Horn of Africa, shares borders with Sudan to the west, Ethiopia to the south, Djibouti to the southeast, and the northeast and eastern parts of the country have extensive coastlines along the Red Sea. Eritrea's history dates back to the prehistoric era, later it was under the rule of the Kingdom of Aksum and the Kingdom of Ethiopia, and then it was under Italian and British administration. In 1950, Eritrea was federated with Ethiopia, and in 1993, it declared its independence and gained international recognition. Asmara is the capital and serves as a commercial center due to being the largest city. Other significant cities include Massawa, Tessene, and Assab.
Eritrea has a population of approximately 3.6 million, and the official currency is Ethiopian Birr. Although there is no official language of the nation, nine languages are spoken by nine ethnic groups Tigre, Tigrinya, Kunama, Nara, Afar, Saho, Beja, Bilen, and Arabic. Tigrinya, Arabic, and English serve as working languages, while Italian is spoken as well.
Agriculture and mining are the primary sources of income in the country, with the majority of the population residing in rural areas. The main exports from Eritrea include cattle, textiles, and consumer products and the industry is concentrated in the capital, Asmara.
Eritrea has a tropical monsoon climate that is somewhat milder and receives more rainfall compared to Ethiopia. While the highlands experience harsh winters (December-February), temperatures in the lower areas range from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius between October and May. From June to September, temperatures in the country can soar up to 40 degrees. Geographically, Eritrea falls within the subequatorial and tropical climate zones, resulting in a highly variable climate.
Traditional Eritrean cuisine places great importance on spicy dishes and it is likely to encounter traditional Ethiopian flavors. Some unique Eritrean dishes include Kitcha, a type of bread made from wheat, Injera, a thick, spongy pancake, Tsebhi, a dish made with lamb or beef, fresh tomatoes, and chili peppers, and Alicha Birsen, a spicy lentil dish. Additionally, Swa, a locally brewed beer made from sorghum, is one of the famous beverages. Eritrean coffee known as Bun and Eritrean tea called Shahi are also popular among many tourists who visit the country.
